TAN LE
Tan Le was born on 20/5/77 in Vietnam. She was awarded Young Australian of the year in 1998 for her community work with Refugees. She is also a Co-founder of Emotive Lifesciences, where she worked on a new type of remote control using brainwaves instead of a keyboard or mouse.
She escaped from Vietnam by boat with her Mother, Grandmother and little sister when she was 4 years old. They sailed for five days and were attacked by pirates, had engine problems and she saw a man die. She then spent 3 months in a Refugee camp before finally arriving in Melbourne. Her Mother worked on farms and then in a car factory working two shifts a day, 6 days a week. They were very poor and had to wear second hand clothes. They couldn’t speak English and were often teased. She had to sleep in one bed with her mother and sister. Her mother had terrible nightmares about the boat so it was Tan’s job to wake her up when she got them. Her mother worked really hard to save money and she eventually opened up a computer store. She also studied to become a Beautician. At 15 Tan began helping Vietnamese people find jobs and by 18 she was President of the Vietnamese Community which raised money and provided employment training and support for the community. She was awarded Australian of the year for this outstanding work. She also worked hard at promoting multiculturalism. She completed a Law degree and but decided to start a new telecommunications company. She is invited to speak all over the world at different functions. Dr
